College prices have been a controversy for many years, many think college should be free. Many countries, like Denmark, Finland, and France, have made college free, but making college free would not benefit the teachers or the tax paying community. That does not mean that college can not become more affordable for students. Many schools are talking about how many young adults would benefit from such action. They have also estimated the money it would save students who get the first two years free. If colleges did this, it would increase the partnership between states and schools. Fran Cubberley said: “The America’s College Promise proposal would create a new partnership with states to help them waive tuition in high-quality programs, while promoting key reforms to help more students complete at least two years of college. If all states participate, an estimated 9 million students could benefit. A full-time community college student could save an average of $3,800 in tuition per year.” This shows that making college cheaper or even free for the first two years could help the lives of students who want to continue school but do not have the money. Making college attainable for everyone, not just the middle and high class would help our country grow and prosper. Colleges world wide have come to the idea of making community colleges free. Many of which who have made community colleges free have seen a larger amount of students attending college and continuing. If college was attainable many more students would go and continue on their studies. “Many four-year schools have already jumped on the transfer bandwagon, recognizing that associate degree completer's are more likely to earn their bachelor’s degree than students beginning with them as freshmen. More expensive four-year colleges would most likely see a broader applicant pool among students whose resources are more available or who might be more amenable to taking on a student loan as a result of their first two years being tuition free” (Cubberley).
That being said, schools would have a higher amount of students going, thus creating a higher revenue.
College today is much more feasible than it was years back. Today’s parents do not need their children to stay home and work on the farm. Girls do not need to learn to become mothers, that is not how our society is any more. Students can continue to be students for as long as money permits them. Money is what holds children back, this is why many children only complete high school. High school is paid for by the taxpayers, not the students. High school diplomas have been virtually replaced with college degrees. What this means is, children who have completed high school have a harder time finding work if they have only completed high school. Many jobs ask for certain skill sets that only college can prepare them for. The quote will explain the importance of lowering college prices and why they need to be lowered.
“In many aspects, a four-year college degree has essentially replaced the high school diploma as the necessary preparation for a career in the modern information economy. Higher-order skills, including critical- and creative-thinking abilities, are often required to compete globally. Yet, many students in the United States cannot afford the tuition to achieve these skills. Consequently, they are unable to attend college or end up dropping out due to exorbitant costs. According to the College Board, the United States ranked twelfth among thirty-six developed nations in the percentage of population that has earned a college degree”(Free College Tuition: Guide To Critical Analysis).
These children need a college degree in order to make it in the real world, but without money these children have no way of making it unless college’s lower their prices. Jobs for not only high schoolers', but college graduates as well has become scarce.
Many adults who have graduated college are now facing a new stress. Many of these graduates cannot find work. Many students are now wondering if a college diploma will actually get them work. Many of these kids who are thinking about going to college are getting more reasons to say no. College puts a lot of people at risk for debt, but to never get a job they are proud of. This has made many skeptical about joining college. Jesse Colombo will provide some statistics, “there are now a total of 17 million underemployed American college graduates, including nearly 320,000 waiters & waitresses and 80,000 bartenders. As today’s young are growing skeptical of the value of Ivy League diplomas, Princeton graduates are finding themselves working in video stores because they can’t start careers” (Colombo). Working is what keeps the economy going if graduates cannot find work then our economy will plunder.
